Bear McCreary’s “Revelations” Score

If you’re a fan of Battlestar Galactica and you are interested in the music that goes into the show, you really MUST read Bear McCreary’s blog post, which explains how and why he wrote the music for the mid-season finale, “Revelations.”

The guy’s a genius. The lyrics that he wrote (which are sung by a choir in Samoan and Latin) gave me goosebumps. And it’s humbling to hear that people as brilliant as Mr. McCreary still worry about how the hell they’re going to top themselves.

SPOILERS for the episode are included! You have been warned!

I wish we could buy this soundtrack right NOW.

James Callis on Gaius Baltar

The A.V. Club has an excellent interview with James Callis (Gaius Baltar) HERE.

There’s some phrase, I think it’s in Chaucer, about how everything that’s written is didactic. As soon as you write something down, as long as it’s not a shopping list, it’s some idea about the world. It’s Michel de Montaigne writing his essays, it’s Plato writing The Republic, it’s Ron writing Battlestar. All of these things concern human beings, and somebody’s idea about them. Everything that we write is to teach ourselves in some way to behave better, to think more, or to think differently. And if the thing you’re doing doesn’t actually address any of those, then maybe you are writing a shopping list.

I really do believe James Callis is one of the most talented actors on TV right now. He’s just so lovely.

New Show: Fringe

Well, I’m officially excited about JJ Abrams’ new show Fringe, how about you?

An X-Files with the mythology laid out from the get-go, Fringe promises to ride grody special effects, the chemistry of its oddball trio, and Lance Reddick’s basso profundo to the genre promised land. After watching the pilot, we can only say: More, please.

Pacey aside, you’ve got Lance Reddick (The Wire, Lost) and John Noble (The Madness-of-King-Lear-ish Denthor in LOTR). You’ve got sci-fi, horror, and creepy mythology all rolled into one nerdtastic ball of JJ Abrams goodness. I’m usually not one to get excited about pilots, but in this case, I’ll make an exception.

Lost Season 3 Soundtrack Finally Released!

For any fans of original soundtracks, the Lost Season 3 soundtrack was finally released last week. Michael Giacchino is back with 2 discs (67 tracks!) of the sometimes disquieting, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes terrifying, but always amazing music he writes for Lost.

Buy it here on Amazon!

My own personal favorite theme from the show is Locke’s - “Locke’d Out Again” from the Season 1 soundtrack is my favorite piece. Desmond and Penny and Sun and Jin also have gorgeous themes, and you cannot deny the Action Sayid music, or the POOT POOT BRUMP (i.e. Ben says something evil, they cut away to commercial, POOT POOT BRUMP).

An added bonus are Giacchino’s pun-tastic song titles. This time around we’ve got “Leggo My Eko,” “Here Today, Gone to Maui,” “Rushin’ The Russian,” “Benomination of the Temple,” “Weapon of Mass Distraction,” “Through the Locke-ing Glass,” “All Jack’ed Up,” and my favorite, “Jintimidating Bernard.”

The Charlie songs will break your heart. Just a warning.

In other news, thanks for all your wonderful comments on my Lost Finale Recap! Up next I’ve got some lists (The Best Nerds, Geeks, and Dorks) and most likely a Battlestar Galactica Season 4 recap after the last episode airs Friday. So keep an eye out. Unless you’re Colonel Tigh, in which case that may be difficult.

Bear McCreary and an update

Anyone who loved the music on this week’s episode of Battlestar Galactica should definitely read Bear McCreary’s post about scoring the music and Gaeta’s song. Spoilers, obviously! This man never fails to blow my mind!

He also mentions a much later episode in the season and I have to admit, he has me intrigued!

And a quick site update: Real life has been kicking me in the ass lately; I’ve been much busier than usual with work and obligations outside the realm of the interwebs. I won’t have a recap of the Locke episode “Cabin Fever” for you, but I do plan on recapping “There’s No Place Like Home.” Whether or not I recap that episode in two installments or just one big one depends on how much free time I’ve got.

Once things calm down for me I also plan on writing more features for the site, like weekly lists, reviews, and whatever else I can dream up. So keep a look out!
